Call for applications for mentorship program on elections

UNESCO Islamabad Office in coordination with UNDP, and in partnership with PPF, is implementing the “Project for Electoral Assistance” ahead of Pakistan’s 2018 national and provincial elections.


The project aims to build the capacity of male and female journalists, editors, and recent graduates in journalism/mass communications on electoral reporting so that they are fully equipped to inform on electoral processes during the 2018 and future elections.

‘Media persons must be able to perform duties without fear’


KARACHI: On the eve of World Press Freedom Day, I wish to assure the media workers of Pakistan that the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) will end impunity of crimes against journalists as a manifesto pledge.


This was stated on Wednesday by PPP Chairperson Bilawal Bhutto Zardari in a message on World Press Freedom Day, which is celebrated worldwide today (Thursday).

Rs85.175m set for monitoring TVs


Islamabad: Up-gradation of monitoring system up to 250 television channels and media development and implementation of the Code of Conduct are part of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting’s schemes for the next financial year.


Against the estimated cost of Rs196.728 million for the up-gradation of TV monitoring system, Rs85.175 million have been proposed for the next fiscal under the Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP). Rs15 million has been proposed for the media development and implementation of the Code of Conduct while the estimated cost is Rs30 million. Both these are un-approved schemes.

Defamation case: Jang group owners must appear in person


ISLAMABAD: The Sindh High Court has upheld the order of an additional sessions judge in Karachi to proceed further against Jang Group CEO Mir Shakilur Rehman and his son Mir Ibrahim Rehman for allegedly defaming a journalist by publishing false news against him.


Earlier, journalist Asad Kharal had filed a private complaint before the Karachi West additional session judge under section 200 of CrPC alleging that he is an honest journalist but Jang Group published false news against him on June 18, 2016 by misreporting court proceedings. Kharal alleged that the motive behind publishing that false story was to defame him.

Chief Minister opens counselling center for terror victims

QUETTA : Balochistan Chief Minister Mir Abdul Quddus Bizenjo on Wednesday inaugurated Individual and, the province’s first counseling centre for journalists working in war zones as well as victims of terrorism.

Addressing the inauguration ceremony, the chief minister said the counseling centre would be beneficial for the journalist community in the province.

Editors vow impartial election coverage

Newspaper and magazine editors from all over Pakistan attending the Council of Pakistan Newspaper Editors (CPNE) meeting termed the standing committee’s annual progress report satisfactory.

The CPNE standing committee meeting chaired by CPNE President Zia Shahid took place at a private hotel where a detailed discussion examining the council’s annual progress report was held.

The world’s first bulletproof book, launched by SOC Outreach


In an effort to support girls’ education, SOC Outreach (spearheaded by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy) and BBDO have collaborated to create the world’s first bulletproof book, titled, Knowledge is Bulletproof. The book is written by Sanam Maher and tells the story of Shazia Ramzan and Kainat Riaz, the two girls who were shot alongside Malala, and who later went on to become advocates for education.

The book, which has 150 pages, is bound with a special layering of bullet-resistant Kevlar XP fiber that has the capability to repel a 9mm bullet fired from as close as 5 meters.
